Dr. Oluseun A. Sowemimo, (Dr. Seun) is a board-certified, fellowship-trained general, laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon specializing in minimally invasive weight loss surgery, varicose vein treatment and general surgical procedures, including diverticulitis, gallbladder and hernia conditions.
His private practice, Prime Surgicare, is located at the Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. He is also a principal at Central Jersey Bariatrics, a private surgical practice specializing in the latest minimally invasive weight loss procedures. Most recently, Dr. Seun successfully completed specialized fellowship training in advanced minimally invasive (laparoscopic), robotic and open bariatric surgery at the Hospital of St. Raphael, New Haven, CT, a 511-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Yale University School of Medicine, renowned for excellence in patient care and top-quality medical education (2006).
Previously, Dr. Seun completed his general surgery internship and residency training at College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, Harlem Hospital Center, New York, where he was also appointed Chief Resident (2004 - 2005). Additionally, he earned a medical degree at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. He started surgical training at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London, after he completed Clinical Clerkships at Kings College Hospital, London.

Dr. Seun practices medicine with a personal, lighthearted and easy-going point-of-view. He is married with one daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys a good round of tennis.


Julie Parrott, MS, RD, LD has worked in the field of nutrition for more than 20 years. She earned her bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and master of science degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She found her passion working in obesity treatment but also garnered extensive experience in sports nutrition and eating disorders. Julie is a published research dietitian and offers extensive clinical expertise after affiliations with university, hospital and private practice settings. She also worked as a clinical research study coordinator and clinical monitor for the Lap Band FDA trials for the BioEnterics/Inamed LAGB Device. She is certified as a fitness instructor and personal trainer by the American Council for Exercise.
Julie served as the founding Bariatric Surgery Sub-units Coordinator for the American Dietetic Association and Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group Sub-unit Director. She is an active member of the ASMBS Integrated Health (IH) Executive Council and IH Clinical Issues and Guidelines committee. She co-authored the ASMBS Nutrition Guidelines for the Surgical Weight Loss Patient and continues to serve as an Allied Health Editor for the journal, Surgery for Obesity and Related Disorders (SOARD).
L. Karen Scott, RN, BSN
Lifestyle Management and Bariatric Surgery Coordinator
Karen has been at the Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center at CentraState Medical Center for over 25 years. Along with coordinating the Bariatric Surgery Education and Support Program, her varied responsibilities include coordinating nutrition, weight management and fitness programs for adults and children as well as presenting workshops for corporations and community groups on various health topics.
Caryn Alter, MS, RD
Registered dietitian and nutrition educator
Caryn has worked at the Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center at CentraState Medical Center for over 18 years. She is a registered dietitian with a master’s degree in nutrition and public health. Caryn teaches the bariatric surgery preparation classes and is also an instructor in our adult weight management programs. In addition, she provides individual consultations and dietary instruction for clients of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at CentraState Medical Center.
Lori Skurbe, RD, MPH, Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Health Education Specialists
Registered dietitian and nutrition educator
Lori has worked at the Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center at CentraState Medical Center for 6 years. She is a registered dietitian with a master's degree in public health with an emphasis on health education and behavioral science. Lori teaches the bariatric surgery preparation classes and is also an instructor in our adult and childhood weight management programs. In addition, Lori facilitates our bariatric surgery support groups.
